Worcester's Quinsigamond Community College helped secure a $20 million from the U.S. Department of Labor for all 15 community colleges in the Bay State to provide job training for laid-off workers.
More than $500 million was distributed to 32 awardees nationwide as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program sponsored by the DOL. The program is aimed at providing job training to workers who have recently been laid off.
Job training programs as part of the state's portion of the grant will include education in the life science, biotechnology, IT, health care, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, financial services and entrepreneurial sectors. Quinsigamond applied for the grant on behalf of the state's community colleges.
The program is part of $2 billion that comes from the federal health care and education reconciliation act, which is aimed at providing support for hiring and reemployment services to increase opportunities for the unemployed.
