Rail Agreement Submitted To Fed. Board

The transportation agreement between the Patrick-Murray administration and Florida-based rail giant CSX Transportation has been filed for review by the federal Surface Transportation Board.

The agreement reached in September between the state and CSX is largely the work of Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray, former mayor of Worcester. The agreement provides for more commuter rail trips between Worcester and Boston.

As part of the agreement, CSX has agreed to help defray the MBTA's liability insurance cost for running the additional passenger trains and to pay the deductible on the liability policy in the event of a collision involving a CSX freight train that is deemed to be at fault for the accident.

CSX has also agreed to sell freight easement rights to certain South Coast lines to Massachusetts Coastal Railroad when the state purchases those lines in May.
