Raytheon to test Protonex fuel cells

Southborough-based Protonex Technology Corp. said it and Waltham-based Raytheon Co. would work together to develop a portable fuel cell system for the U.S. Army.

The work will be done under a previously awarded $3.5 million contract for Protonex to develop 250-watt portable fuel cell system much smaller and lighter than battery or generator systems.

Protonex said the new project would mark the first time the company has worked with Raytheon, a $20 billion defense contractor. Under the contract, Raytheon will test and help optimize the methanol-fueled Protonex system to make sure it meets military standards.

The system is intended for use by Army Special Operations and the Marines for charging military batteries, or to power equipment in remote locations.
