Readers Weigh In: Don't Cut Number of Weeks To Collect Jobless Benefits

Compared with other states, Massachusetts offers generous unemployment benefits. But business groups believe reform is needed in the state's unemployment compensation system, and their argument recently found the sympathetic ears of two key Democratic lawmakers.

One suggestion, from the business lobbying group Associated Industries of Massachusetts, would reduce the maximum number of weeks an unemployed person can collect jobless benefits from the current 30. In most states, the limit is 26, unless Congress authorizes extensions. But in last week's Flash Poll, a slight majority of voters said there should be no change.
