Reliant set to vote on acquisition May 9

Nathan Fiske Tarek Elsawy, left, took over as president and CEO of Reliant Medical Group last year.

Reliant Medical Group’s board of trustees will likely decide whether or not the physician network will partner with a Minnesota company when it meets May 9, a spokeswoman confirmed Monday.

Sources told Worcester Business Journal last week Reliant, the largest independent physician group in Central Massachusetts, was close to reaching an acquisition agreement, and that the interested company was OptumHealth, a Minnesota-based division of national insurer and health management organization United Healthcare.

Reliant is one of the top 10 largest employers in Central Massachusetts; the nonprofit has about 2,500 employees and cares for more than 320,000 patients. It reported $677.5 million in revenue in 2016.
