Rotmans Furniture and Carpet is now in the television business, a move that Steve Rotman said is a natural fit.
As televisions become more high-tech and people connect them to computers and various sound components and accessories, Rotman said that for some, redesigning a room in the home can mean rethinking home entertainment setups. So selling televisions alongside furniture seemed like a logical fit for the store.
“An awful lot of people re-doing rooms think in terms of upgrading their TVs,” Rotman said. “They find that the technology in the TVs has changed so much since their original purchase.”
The store opened its new department in late November. It features about 60 different televisions as large as 73 inches.
Rotman and his wife Leslie also filed incorporation papers for Rotmans TV Inc. in December. Rotman said they did that because there is the potential in the future to run the department as its own business, but for now, it is being treated as another department in the store.
Rotman said he hired six new employees, some part-time and some full-time, to staff the new department. In recent years, Rotmans has also added departments for interior design and window treatments, he said.
The store’s College Square location, with more than 200,000 square feet of showroom and warehouse space, opened in 1964.
