S. Korean Superconductor Cable System Goes Live With AMSC Cable

A South Korean utility company says it has energized the world's longest distribution-voltage superconductor cable system in the world, which is powered by cable manufactured by Devens-based American Superconductor.

Korea Electric Power Corp. said that the system, located outside Seoul, is nearly a half-mile in length and is capable of carrying 50 megawatts of power and that it is the longest such system in operation. It contains about 50 miles of AMSC wire, which is called Amperium.

Such systems can conduct up to 10 times the amount of power of conventional cables made with copper wire, the companies said, and are aimed at meeting rising electricity demands.

KEPCO is planning to build several larger systems in South Korea, including one that will be about a kilometer in length.
