Safety first with lasers

Southborough surgical device maker Gyrus ACMI Inc. has developed what it calls the world's first endoscope protection system, designed to prevent accidental laser damage to its surgical ureteroscopes, the company said today.

The system warns users with a tone or shuts down the laser if improper or dangerous use is detected, according to the company.

The company said that up to 70 percent of ureteroscope malfunctions can be attributed to laser damage. Ureteroscopes are used by surgeons to access, diagnose and treat most upper urinary tract conditions.
