The state's Department of Environmental Protection is doling out more than $200,000 to retrofit 78 diesel waste collection vehicles, including in three Central Massachusetts communities.
The town of Framingham will receive $7,410 to retrofit three trash trucks, while private haulers Casella Waste Systems Inc. of Rutland will receive $48,041 and P. Pellegrino Trucking Co. of Shrewsbury will get $7,683 as part of the grant.
Casella has plans to retrofit 18 vehicles in South Central Massachusetts and Pellegrino will retrofit three vehicles that serve Northborough and Shrewsbury.
This is the third year the state has provided grants, supplied by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to reduce diesel emissions. In the past two years the state has given out $492,000 to retrofit 169 waste collection vehicles.
