The Massachusetts Clients' Security Board awarded $1.3 million during the 2009 fiscal year to clients whose lawyers had stolen from them, including $243,498 to the trust of the mother of a disbarred Southbridge attorney.
Disbarred attorney Adrian Gaucher Jr. borrowed heavily from a trust established by his now-deceased mother and tried to discharge those loans during his own personal bankruptcy, the board said. The $243,498 awarded to the administrator of Gaucher's mother's trust was the largest award made by the board this year.
"In short, he fleeced his mother out of almost everything she had," the board, which is a division of the state Supreme Judicial Court, said.
Other Central Massachusetts lawyers found by the board to have stolen from clients include Raymond A. Desautels, a disbarred lawyer from Oxford, who had nine former clients receive a total of $11,084; Theodore Scott Geller of Worcester, who had five clients receive a total of $24,890 in awards; Irwin Kwiat of Worcester, who had two clients receive a total of $22,740 and Steven L. Ostrovitz of Framingham, who had one client receive an $1,800 award.
