State rules against FedEx

An audit by the Connecticut Department of Labor found that a former FedEx Home Delivery driver based in Connecticut should have been classified as an employee, and thus eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. The Teamsters Local Union 671 has accused FedEx of trying to limit benefits it pays to delivery drivers by classifying them as contractors, rather than employees. Drivers at the FedEx facility in Windsor voted to join the union in May. FedEx has maintained that its drivers are independent contractors. A spokesman for the union said FedEx uses "slippery language" to classify the drivers.
