Massachusetts added 1,700 jobs in August while its unemployment rate climbed slightly to 5.3 percent, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The state's August unemployment rate was up from 5 percent in July. The education and health services sector continued to be the state's largest, adding jobs for the fifth consecutive month in August, the labor department said. The state's estimates also show job gains in the professional, scientific, business services, construction, leisure and hospitality and manufacturing sectors. The manufacturing sector added 700 jobs in August, the most it's added since July 2006.
Still, manufacturing employment is down 1.4 percent compared to one year ago.
The largest August decline in employment came from the trade, transportation and utilities sector, which was down 1,400 jobs compared to July. That sector has lost 5,800 jobs this year.
