State Unemployment Up Slightly In March

The state's unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in March, up from a newly revised February rate of 7.7 percent, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The state had originally estimated February's rate at 7.8 percent. In March 2008, the state's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent.

The education and health services sectors were the only ones to show job gains in March. In all, 20,300 jobs were lost during the month with the leisure and hospitality sector leading the way down by shedding 6,200 jobs after adding 4,100 jobs during the prior two months.

The manufacturing sector lost 2,800 jobs during the month and employment in that sector is down 5.4 percent from a year ago.

The professional, scientific and business services sector dropped 4,700 jobs in March and is down 30,500 jobs or 6.2 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
