T&G Redesigns, Consolidates Sections

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette has unveiled a redesign of the newspaper that along with a host of other changes combines its zoned sections in one local section, which now carries its formerly stand-alone business and living sections.

The new look has been in the works for months, after researching the market and listening to readers, according to the paper's executives.

The business section, now called Money, is inside the local section of the paper and will focus more on consumer news than the coverage of businesses, according to Harry Whitin, the paper's editor. Whitin discussed the redesign in a note on the paper's front page this morning. The paper has also created a "watchdog" team of reporters and an editor to keep an eye on "how government and businesses are serving the public," Whitin said.

The paper is also adding a Sunday Living magazine that will serve as its Living section, as well as a weekend entertainment guidebook called Go!

The T&G, as well as the Boston Globe, is owned by the New York Times Co., which reported a $57.8 million loss for 2008. In 2007, the company reported earnings of $208.7 million. The company's revenue decreased by 13 percent from $2 billion to $1.8 billion during the same period.
