T&G Union Ratifies New Contract

News and circulation department employees at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette today ratified a new employment contract with the newspaper.

The T&G unit of the Providence Newspaper Guild Local 31041 has been in bargaining negotiations with the New York Times Co., which owns the T&G and the Boston Globe, since its previous contract expired in September 2007.

The new, two-year contract provides the 119 members of Local 31041 at the T&G with a one-time lump sum payment and a provision to reopen wage negotiations in a year. The amount of the lump sum payment was not disclosed by the union.

The new contract keeps a cap on union employees' share of health insurance costs without significant changes to the level of coverage provided, the union said.

In a statement, the union said the contract will be signed in the next few days.
