Training Program To Boost Advanced Manufacturing

The state is creating a program that will help meet the future workforce needs of the Massachusetts manufacturing industry, Gov. Deval Patrick announced Thursday at an industry event in Foxborough.

The governor said the program, the Advanced Manufacturing Regional Partnership Academy, is the first program of its kind in the United States and will provide hands-on learning opportunities, helping eliminate a chief industry concern of finding well-trained employees to fill jobs.

“Advanced manufacturing is an area of critical focus, one that can help us put people to work now and prepare our workers for the jobs of the 21st century global economy,” Patrick said. “It is central to our strategy of investing today in order to create a stronger commonwealth for the next generation.”

The announcement was part of what was called an Advanced Manufacturing Summit at Gillette Stadium, which brought together government officials and industry and business leaders to discuss a sector of the state’s economy that expects to hire 100,000 people over the next decade. Nearly 500 industry professionals attended.

The summit was designed to focus on workforce development, as well as concentrate on promoting the vitality of the state’s manufacturing industry, improving supply-chain opportunities for small companies by connecting them to large manufacturing companies, and helping small manufacturers compete by sharing best practices and better connecting those companies with state programs and resources, Patrick’s office said.
