Two Central Mass. companies have received nearly $800,000 in grant funding from the Industrial Rail Access Program, which aims to enhance rail and freight access, the Gov. Charlie Baker administration announced on Nov 19.

Leominster Packaging & Warehousing will receive $348,798, and United Material Management of Millbury will receive $500,000, according to a press release.

The Leominster funding will support the installation of a new siding track and equipment to unload plastic pellets, intended to help meet demand from area plastic manufacturing businesses, according to a press release from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The project will increase the volume of cargo being shipped by rail and is slated to eliminate 300 truck trips on the area’s roads. The company will cover 40% of the project’s costs.

United Material Management, in turn, will use its half-million dollar grant to install a baling system at a municipal waste transfer facility, which will allow for waste to be baled into bags and loaded on railcars, to be shipped out of state. The system’s installation is expected to result in the increased annual volume of more than1,500 railcars, the elimination of 10,000 truck trips, as well as new jobs. The company will cover 69% of project costs, according to MassDOT.
