UMass Hires Grand Man From Harvard

The University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center have wooed prominent neuromuscular disease researcher Dr. Robert H. Brown Jr. to Worcester from Harvard Medical School.
Brown accepted an appointment as chairman of the school and hospital's department of neurology. He'll begin his new job in October, according to the school. Brown founded the Day Neuromuscular Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1984 and is well known for his research into neuromuscular diseases such as ALS and muscular dystrophy.
In 1993, Brown and colleagues defined gene mutation as one cause of familial ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He has already collaborated with UMass researchers on developing RNAi-based approach to the treatment of certain neurodegenerative diseases. RNAi itself was pioneered by UMass professor Craig C. Mello.
