UMass Med. Safety Measures Recognized

The UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester has received an honorable mention Betsy Lehman Patient Safety Recognition Award for its efforts to reduce the number of infections contracted by patients while in the hospital.

Specifically, the award recognized UMass' critical care operations committee, which developed guidelines to help cut down on ventilator associated pneumonia and central venous catheter blood stream infections.

The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction is a division of the state Department of Public Health and was formed in 2002. It is named for Boston Globe reporter Betsy Lehman, who died as the result of a chemotherapy overdose.
