The University of Massachusetts Medical School has named a team of four RNA experts, led by Nobel Laureate Craig C. Mello, to head its new RNA Therapeutics Institute.
The institute, which will be part of UMass's Advanced Therapeutics Cluster, will work on RNA interference technology to silence disease-causing genes.
The leadership team consists of UMass researchers. Besides Mello, the other three directors will be Melissa J. Moore and Phillip D. Zamore, both of whom are professors of biochemistry and molecular pharmacology, and Victor Ambros, a professor of molecular medicine. Mello is also a co-founder of Worcester's RXi Pharmaceuticals.
The directors will work to recruit faculty and design the institute.
Along with the RNA Institute, the Advanced Therapeutics Cluster will include the Gene Therapy Center and the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.
It will be housed in the Albert Sherman Center, a new $423 million building funded in part with $90 million from the 2008 Massachusetts Life Sciences Bill and scheduled for a September groundbreaking.
