UMass Receives Liver Transplant Certification

UMass Memorial Medical Center has joined 40 other hospitals in the country certified by the federal government to perform liver transplants.

The Organ Procurement Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing gave the approval to UMass's Division of Organ Transplantation. The hospital said there is a "significant" shortage of transplant organs from deceased donors. Now, living friends and family will be able to donate a portion of their liver, which can regenerate, to a loved one.

UMass is the only hospital in Central Massachusetts with the liver transplant capabilities. The division also transplants kidneys and pancreases.
