Unemployment Increases By 466,000 In August

In August, the number of unemployed people in the United States increased by 466,000 to 14.9 million, and the unemployment rate rose by less than one percentage point to 9.7 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate changed little between June and July and has increased by 0.4 or 0.5 percentage points each month between December 2008 and last May.

Since the recession began in December 2007, the number of unemployed people has increased by 7.4 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 4.8 percentage points.
