Waters Posts Q1 Profit Gain On Weak Sales

Milford-based laboratory equipment maker Waters Corp. reported a first quarter profit of $73.3 million, up from $68.5 million a year ago despite a 10 percent decline in sales.
The company said sales for the quarter hit $333 million compared to $372 million a year ago.
Unfavorable foreign exchange rates were partially to blame for the decline in sales while carefully controlling costs contributed to the profit gain, the company said.
The company spent less compared to the same period a year ago on sales efforts and administrative expenses, as well as research and development during the quarter.
