WBJ Podcast: COVID’s fallout in nursing homes

In Worcester County, nearly 4 out of 5 coronavirus-related deaths have come in nursing homes. Although the local figure outpaces the state and national rate, the overwhelming plurality of COVID deaths have come in nursing homes and among the elderly.

In August, UMass Medical School in Worcester was tasked with working to address this problem. Dr. Jerry Gurwitz, the chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at UMass Medical School in Worcester and executive director of the Meyers Primary Care Institute, was named the principal investigator on a project funded by the National Institute on Aging to research ways to set up clinical trials networks to study COVID-19 in nursing homes.
