With more and more people competing for fewer and fewer jobs, The Creative Group says it's time for job hunters to rethink their strategy.
The company, which offers staffing services for the marketing and advertising fields, says some traditional techniques are now "out" while new ways of looking for work are "in."
The "out" list includes overly detailed resumes, and the inclusion of an "objective" section. Better, the company says, are streamlined resumes with lists of relevant accomplishments and a "summary of qualifications" to highlight applicable skills.
Blanketing employers with resumes and cover letters should be replaced by research on prospective employers, with applications sent only to good matches. Similarly, reference lists should be customized for each application.
The Creative Group also recommends constant networking both online and in person, and the use of LinkedIn to seek recommendations from contacts.
The company also calls for aggressiveness in interviews, finishing the conversation with a request for the job on a trial basis instead of just asking when you can expect a call.
