When it comes to the country's best-performing urban areas economically, the Worcester area is just OK, according to a new report by the Milken Institute.

The institute's report puts the Worcester metropolitan area just below average, 107th of nationally out of 200 larger metro areas. It was 92nd the previous year in the California think tank's annual rankings.

The area did best among categories more narrowly focused on technology jobs: 17th for location quotient for high-tech jobs, a gauge for how many tech jobs are in an area as a share of the workforce. The area was 30th for high-tech gross domestic product, and 37th for growth in high-tech GDP.

More broadly though, the report ranked Greater Worcester 129th for job growth over the past five years, and 186th in the most recent year. It landed 93rd for wages and salary growth over the last five years. The metro area's employment has dropped slightly, by about 1%, since hitting a peak in February 2018, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The Worcester metropolitan area includes Worcester County and Connecticut's Windham County.

San Francisco topped the Milken Institute's rankings. The top cities tended to be clustered in higher-growth states including California and Florida. Boston ranked 64th, Springfield 121st, Providence 130th, and Hartford 176th.
