Worcester Docs Do Well By Drug Firms

Several doctors based in Worcester have been paid to act as consultants, advisors and speakers for pharmaceutical firms in the last year, according to an analysis by the Boston Globe and ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative journalism website.

For the report, the Globe and ProPublica examined the public payment disclosures of seven pharmaceutical firms.

Between 2009 and the first half of this year, the seven pharmaceutical firms highlighted in the report paid Worcester-based doctors $281,480 for speaking, consulting, leading "expert led forums," patient education and other services.

Among the Worcester doctors best compensated by drug companies were Dr. Richard C. Tomb, a psychiatrist who made $35,450 from Eli Lilly and Astra Zeneca during the year, and Dr. Amjad Bahnassi, a psychiatrist and addiction specialist, who made $75,140 in speaking fees from Astra Zeneca and GSK.
