Worcester Public Market sets June 18 opening date

The Worcester Public Market, forced by the coronavirus pandemic to close only a little more than a month after its grand opening, now has a target date in mind to reopen: June 18.

The planned reopening still depends on official guidelines, the market said in a Facebook post, but once the reopening takes place, vendors will be wearing masks and gloves and will maintain proper spacing from coworkers, vendors and customers.

"Rest assured that Worcester Public Market will continue to maintain the highest level of hygiene and cleanliness," the post said.

The market's reopening would come more than a week after restaurants in Massachusetts could begin serving patrons again, but only in outdoor spaces with extra room between tables. That requirement has forced restaurateurs to obtain special local permitting to serve alcohol outdoors.

The public market, which opened in early February in Kelley Square, will similarly be hampered by occupancy limits and will be using new outdoor dining areas on the sidewalks surrounding the market.

Three new vendors are slated to add to the market's roster of businesses: George's Middle Eastern Bakery, Sabrosa Venezuela and Akra African Fusion Cuisine.

Other restaurants are slowly reopening around Worcester.

On Shrewsbury Street, Piccolo's, Valentinos, Flying Rhino Cafe, VIA Italian Table and Volturno have reopened with outdoor seating areas. On Main Street, Armsby Abbey, hampered by little outdoor space, has said it will continue operating for take-out only. Deadhorse hill has yet to reopen but is hosting a pop-up food event Friday and Saturday. Worcester Beer Garden and Pavilion on Franklin Street will be open for outdoor seating beginning June 15.

VIA's sibling restaurant on Shrewsbury Street, 111 Chop House, is reopening Thursday, as is Sole Proprietor on Highland Street. O'Connor's Restaurant and Bar is slated to reopen with outdoor dining Friday. Elsewhere, Peppercorn's has reopened, as has Vincent's

Worcester's Niche Hospitality Group opened three of its restaurants to outdoor dining starting Wednesday: Mezcal Worcester, and The Fix locations in Marlborough and Worcester.
