Following an eight-month stint on an interim basis, Matthew Thaler has been named vice president and general counsel of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Thaler, who joined WPI in 2018 as the school’s deputy counsel, had been serving in the interim role since October 2024, according to a Thursday press release from the university.
“Matt’s deep understanding of higher education law, his principled leadership, and his unwavering commitment to WPI’s mission have made him an invaluable asset to our community,” WPI President Grace Wang said in the press release. “I am confident he will continue to serve WPI well as our vice president and general counsel at a time when the legal and regulatory challenges facing universities are increasingly complex.”
Prior to joining WPI, Thaler served as the in-house legal counsel for Ribbon Communications, a NASDAQ-listed software company based in Texas, according to his LinkedIn profile. He earned a doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law in New York and a bachelor’s degree from Bates College in Maine.
WPI’s former general counsel was David Bunis, who is now serving as senior counsel at Cloherty & Steinberg LLP, a boutique litigation firm based in Boston.
