WPI To Offer Biochemistry Doctorate

In part because of the level of work being done at its Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park in Worcester, the faculty at Worcester Polytechnic Institute has voted to establish a PhD program in biochemistry.

The school said it is seeing increased interest in biochemistry from students, more of whom wish to pursue advanced studies. The PhD program will be run by the school's Chemistry and Biochemistry department, which has offered bachelor of sciences degrees since 1995.

Biochemistry is at the center of the life sciences industry, including pharmaceuticals, disease research, and medical devices.

WPI's bioengineering center is a $50 million, 125,000-square-foot facility the school completed in partnership with the Worcester Business Development Corp. in 2007.
