2004 was a good year for Mass. small businesses

The most recent data available from the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration, only three years old, shows that Massachusetts small businesses added 20,400 net new jobs in 2004.

The numbers were part of the Massachusetts Small Business Profile, released today by the SBA. The SBA defines a small business as having less than 500 employees.

A lot has happened in three years, but the numbers suggest that small businesses will continue to lead the state in employment.

"Small businesses are Massachusetts' job-creating dynamo," said Chad Moutray, chief economist for the office of advocacy. "They are the key to the state's ability to increase gross state product, personal income and total employment."

More recent statistics from the SBA show the state had an estimated 651,100 small businesses in 2006, 180,600 of which were employer firms.
