First-time unemployment claims drop

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 331,000 Americans filed for unemployment insurance coverage for the first time during the week ended Oct. 20.

That's a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week. The 4-week moving average was 324,750, an increase of 7,750 from the previous week.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ended Oct. 13, unchanged from the prior week.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ended Oct. 13 was 2,530,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week.
