70% Less Private Equity Raised In Q3

Private equity fundraising dropped by 70 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period a year ago, according to a Dow Jones Private Equity Analyst report.

During the quarter, 72 funds raised $25.2 billion. Through the first nine months of the year, 265 private equity funds raised $79.9 billion, 59 percent less than the $195 billion raised by 315 funds over the same period last year.

The private equity market is "capital constrained and more cautious about committing only to firms they're sure can hit a minimum fundraising target," Dow Jones said.

However, the report said private equity is "beginning to warm up." Several investors made their first investments of the year during the third quarter.

Buyouts drew the most investment, but still recorded a 65 percent decline from a year ago.
