A123 to install energy storage system in Japan

Lithium-ion battery maker A123 Energy Solutions, which has operations in Westborough and Hopkinton, announced Wednesday a contract to supply, install and commission a 1-megawatt energy storage system in Japan.

The system will help IHI Corp. reduce costs and increase the efficiency of its industrial equipment manufacturing operations, A123 said. Specifically, it will be used to integrate a photovoltaic solar array located in Japan’s Tohoku region into the power supply, helping to ease the strain on the country’s grid, which has been burdened since the 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake.

The energy storage system is currently being installed at an IHI factory, said A123, previously known as A123 Systems.

“While last year was a challenging one, we were still able to successfully install and commission several sites around the world,” A123 president Bud Collins said in a statement. “The new project in Japan helps us begin the year with a new win, and we expect to continue this trend and grow the business.”

A123 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2012 and had most of its assets purchased the following month by the Wanxiang Group of China. Waxiang’s lithium-ion battery activity were brought under A123’s leadership in October and aligned with the company’s existing Chinese operations.

A123 has about 130 employees in Westborough and 10 in Hopkinton. The company’s automotive business is handled in Livonia, Mich.
