AG: Hospitals Provided $622M In Community Aid

Hospitals in Massachusetts provided more than $622 million in community benefits, such as free or discounted health care, between July 2010 and June 2011, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced.

“The community benefits provided by Massachusetts hospitals continue to be a vital link to needed services,” Coakley said in a statement. “I am pleased that hospitals provided significant resources in (fiscal year) 2011 and followed our guidelines to report those efforts in a standard, transparent way.”

Nonprofit hospitals offer community programs or provide free or discounted care in support of their charitable missions. Nonprofit hospitals reported $559 million in community benefit expenditures, of which $58.2 million was for free or discounted care provided directly to patients, Coakley’s office said. On average, the state’s nonprofit hospitals spent more than 3 percent of their total patient care expenses on community benefits.
