AMSC Bound For South Australia

Devens-based American Superconductor Corp. will send power grid interconnection equipment to two wind farms under construction in Australia.

The Australia orders represent the 50th and 51st wind farms that have ordered AMSC's D-VAR system. The system allows wind farms to make connections to local power grids, regulates voltage and helps prevent "voltage collapse" on grids to which wind farms connect.

AMSC said the systems were ordered by Suzlon Energy Australia, a subsidiary of Suzlon Energy Ltd. of India. Suzlon is developing a 132 megawatt wind farm in South Australia.

The second system was ordered by Roaring 40s Renewable Energy, which is developing a 111 megawatt wind farm, also in South Australia.

AMSC said it expects to deliver the D-VAR equipment to each project within the next six months.
