Angel Investment Down, Deal Volume Stagnates

Angel investment dropped by 26.2 percent in 2008 as the number of angel-funded deals remained flat compared to 2007, according to the University of New Hampshire Center for Venture Research.

The center, which is part of the university's Whittemore School of Business and Economics, said total angel investments were $19.2 billion in 2008 compared to $26 billion the previous year. The number of deals fell 2.9 percent from 57,120 to 55,480.

The center said the health care/medical devices sector accounted for 16 percent of total angel investment followed by software, retail and biotech, which accounted for 11 percent.

Seventy percent of angel investors to get out of their investments did so as a result of mergers or acquisitions. Bankruptcies accounted for 26 percent of angel exits and IPOs accounted for 4 percent.
