Bay State Helps Lead Drop in N.E. Unemployment

Massachusetts was the only New England state to post a statistically significant change in its unemployment rate in April when it fell 0.2 percentage points to 6.3 percent, the federal government said today.

The April jobless rate for New England dropped slightly from 7 percent in March to 6.9 percent, according to the regional office for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, the rate has fallen 1 percent since April 2011 to the lowest on record since January 2009.

The Massachusetts rate fell from 6.5 percent in March, with a jump in the ranks of the employed by about 11,600. Meanwhile, those calling themselves unemployed fell by about 9,700 to 216,200.

The national jobless rate for April was 8.1 percent.
