Age: 31. Employment Supervisor UPS, Shrewsbury
Whether it's work or volunteering, Belkys Embroz believes that every person has something individual that motivates them. Her job as an employment supervisor at UPS in Shrewsbury and Warwick is to figure out what that motivation is.
Whatever Embroz tackles, she achieves. Her father, who has been a mentor for her, learned to read and write at 36 after being in business for many years. "You have to have integrity, respect and dignity. You have to treat people the way you want to be treated," she says. "That's how my father lived his life and he never had the best job, but now he owns his own business." Not an easy business, either. It's a wholesale perfume company based in New York City.
Embroz, who has lived independently since age 14, holds an MBA from Anna Maria College. She has been on the management track at UPS for six years and seeks to eventually work in corporate learning and development at the company.
Bill Walters formerly worked with Embroz at UPS, and is now director of corporate relations at the United Way of Boston. "Her success is because she is good with new people and helps them feel part of the team," he says, praising her ability to overcome life's challenges while putting herself through school and juggling multiple jobs.
Embroz is also a multiple volunteer, clocking 20 hours a month on average. Venues of choice include Junior Achievement and the WEBENC community for the Center for Women and Enterprise, which certifies women-owned businesses. She volunteers during the Day of Caring for the United Way and tries to slot three volunteer stints per year at her local food bank, and assists in community painting and rebuilding projects.
