Age: 39. Founding Member/Managing Partner,
Chapin Intellectual Property Law LLC, Westboro
Barry Chapin may not invent anything himself, but by combining his engineering background and his law degree, he's able to work with cutting-edge technology and inventors every day.
As a patent attorney for his own local law firm, Chapin Intellectual Property Law LLC of Westboro, Chapin has attracted large companies like Adobe, Cisco and EMC with its combination of engineering and legal expertise and competitive costs.
"Every day is different for me and it's very exciting," he says. "I'm able to give our clients personal attention, charge less than larger firms and meet deadlines better than larger firms."
Chapin notes his experienced staff of eight other patent attorneys, who all previously worked at other patent law firms, is what sets him apart. "I only hire attorneys that have an engineering background and experience in the patent field," he says. "I'm able to hand projects off to them because they did what I did - we all went to law school after being in the engineering field for years."
Chapin works with new medical technology, writing patents for companies that produce cutting-edge hardware and software.
David Rouille, a partner in Chapin's firm, agrees that Chapin is a cut above the rest. "He is amazing at generating new business because Barry knows how to talk to clients," Rouille says. "He has built the firm by responding to our clients' needs."
And when Chapin isn't working, he donates his time and money to ventures he is passionate about, such as creating a ski team at the Westborough High School and volunteering for local cancer walks.
