Business Coaching Vs. Mentoring

It is not surprising that many believe that business coaching and mentoring are identical. Yet, there are differences that managers should understand to properly use both types of assistance effectively.

Business coaches typically provide the following services:

Knowledgeable advice to individuals or groups regarding how they can improve the effectiveness of their business operations.

Stress leadership, process and/or attitude, without necessarily having heavy experience in a particular industry.

Design seminars to address teams or groups on subjects selected by the company to improve staff performance.

Mentors often deliver more personal messages.

Mentoring is typically an informal association between an experienced person and a "partner" who has less experience.

Mentors normally provide one-to-one advice.

A mentor and a "student" often share their thoughts and ideas on items specific to their industry, job and/or company.
