Cognoptix's Alzheimer's Test Yields Strong Results

The multi-site trial of the SAPPHIRE II eye test was able to differentiate 20 Alzheimer’s patients from healthy volunteers in 85 percent of positive cases and 95 percent of negative cases, the Acton-based company said Monday.

“These clinical results give us a great deal of hope that we will eventually be able to intervene early in the course of Alzheimer’s disease, well ahead of the manifestation of symptoms,” said Maria Carrillo, a vice president at the Alzheimer’s Association.

With some 95 percent of Alzheimer’s patients diagnosed by non-specialists, Cognoptix expects a better diagnostic test will allow for intervention before the occurrence of significant loss of neurons or irreversible brain damage.
