Conn. reports job losses in January

The state's nonfarm employment in January was 1,704,300, a decrease of 2,200 jobs from the December 2007 figure, the Connecticut Department of Labor announced.

However, year-end totals indicate that on a seasonally adjusted basis the state gained 13,100 jobs from the January 2007 total of 1,691,200 jobs.

"Connecticut's economy fared well during 2007, gaining 17,000 new jobs and bringing our two-year increase to 35,700," said John Tirinzonie, state labor economist. "The revised figures show a continued gain in employment during the second half of 2007 at a pace that exceeded the nation as a whole. Time will tell if this month's loss of jobs is a temporary setback or whether we are beginning to see the ripple effects of the national economic downturn."
