Corero Adds CEO, Plans To Boost Staff

Hudson-based cyber security firm Corero Network Security plans to add about 15 to 20 workers later this year, after recently naming a new president and CEO.

Marty Meyer, the newly appointed head of the company, said examples of cybersecurity breaches at companies like Sony, TJX Cos., and even the security division of EMC equate to good news for his business. Meyer said it shows that all businesses should be concerned about security.

To meet market demand, the company plans to boost its 65-person workforce 20 percent by the end of the year.

Peace Of Mind A Priority

Businesses are realizing that while robust network security functions may have been a luxury for businesses at one time, they are a necessity today.

Any business that relies on technology as a backbone for its operations should have strong security measures in place, Meyer said. Manufacturers that rely on the web to reach a supply chain, universities that need the web to serve students, and financial and retail institutions that store customer data on their servers - all need to stay ahead of the hackers.

Meyer admitted that it's getting much more difficult to do that.

Hackers have become more targeted and are using more advanced techniques, with some even being supported or sponsored by other governments, Meyer said.

Corero, he said, is positioning itself to respond to those demands by assembling a team of network security professionals, with plans to hire more security engineers.

The company has been going through somewhat of a transformation in the past few years.

Corero Network Security is the American division of Corero, a publicly traded  technology company based in the United Kingdom.

In February, the company purchased Top Layer Security and rebranded the company with the Corero name.

Investors with Corero have built resources into the U.S. operations to build up the company in Massachusetts. While the company was originally run by just American managers, demand is strong enough that a CEO was needed. That's where Meyer came in.

Meyer is a veteran of the technology industry, having worked at ExtendMedia in Newton, which was recently purchased by Cisco Systems, before he joined Corero. He has worked at seven startups in 20 years and said MetroWest is a perfect location for growing a business.

"I find this area very centralized," he said. "It's always been a hotbed of technology with tons of stuff happening here."

Now, Meyer hopes to grow the company in Hudson. The company works with a cadre of more than a dozen independent contractors in addition to its full-time employees. Combined with the hiring of 15 to 20 new employees in the next four months, Meyer is also hoping to expand the company's client base, both domestically and internationally.
