The developers of 12 Crane St. in downtown Southbridge give much of the credit for the opening of the four residential units there to the state Department of Housing and Community Development and the $400,000 it granted the project.
DHCD staff, state and local government officials as well as local residents and businesspeople gathered at the bright silver 12 Crane St. Friday for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the residential units.
Other than the $400,000 DHCD affordable housing grant, the more-than $2 million 12 Crane project used no public money. The massive mixed-use building that housed several different industrial and warehousing operations is now home to a brewery, a pub, a restaurant, a law office, a bakery, a parcel and mailing company and the four apartments. Many of those businesses have been open for nearly a year.
The large apartments are handicap accessible. Three of the four will be rented at market rate, one will be rented as an affordable unit. Developers J. Gabriel McCarthy and Roderick Murphy, who have owned the building for three years, said the apartments wouldn't have been built without the DHCD grant and consulting.
"We just did what they said," Murphy said.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Cassandra Acly, Southbridge's economic development director, said the 12 Crane project would be the most important project in the town's continuing redevelopment.
McCarthy and Murphy have also refurbished several other derelict buildings in Southbridge.
