Diesel-Electric Trains Debut

Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray celebrated the state's purchase of two new diesel-electric locomotives on a ride from Worcester to Boston this morning.

The new purchases, from the Utah Transit Authority, are the first new locomotives in more than two decades for the MBTA's commuter rail fleet.

The locomotives burn about 36,500 fewer gallons of diesel each year than the MBTA's existing locomotives, and each of them will save the state about $78,000 per year.

Last June, the MassDOT Board of Directors approved the purchase of another 20 new diesel-electric locomotives, which will replace the fleet's 20 oldest units in 2013.
