eClinicalWorks Expands With $7.7M Purchase

Having outgrown the 100,000-square-foot headquarters it bought about 18 months ago, electronic health records company eClinicalWorks has spent $7.7 million to expand into a neighboring Westborough building.

CEO and Founder Girish Navani said the addition of the 61,000-square-foot building next door to eClinicalWorks' headquarters at 2 Technology Drive was ideal, as the property went on the market at the same time the company was looking to expand.

"We have more hires joining the company we just don't have a place for them, literally," he said. "We have a batch of new hires starting in two months and HR is asking us, 'Where will they sit?' It worked out really well that right next to our headquarters, 1 Technology Drive came available to purchase."

Last year, the Town of Westborough approved a tax increment financing deal worth $190,000 for eClinicalWorks, to get it to stay in town after moving from the Westborough Executive Park on Route 9.

This year, it's a different story, as Navani said the private company paid cash for its latest purchase and didn't go to the town for assistance in buying the 5-acre property. It was purchased from Terence Conroy of Conroy Development Corp., doing business as One Tech Westborough LLC. A spokeswoman for eClinicalWorks said some leasing tenants will remain in the building.

The firm has continued to grow elsewhere since its launch in 1999, with offices in New York, San Francisco, Georgia, Chicago and India, but Navani said he felt expanding the headquarters was important, rather than adding another office.

"It has always been my desire to continue to build a presence around where we are headquartered," he said. "We can go literally next door. (It) makes communication, working together easy."

The expansion will be just that, all about growth, with no employees relocating or other offices closing, Navani said.

He said the company employs 2,100 worldwide, with about 800 in Westborough, and that the new "batch" of about 26 employees – mostly software development engineers, project managers and support personnel – will be joining within six weeks.

In the past three months, the company has announced contracts with health systems in Kansas City, Ohio and Virginia.
