MassDevelopment announced today that E.L. Harvey & Sons Inc. of Westboro has been granted a $5 million financing package, allowing the firm to construct a 46,000 square-foot construction and demolition (C&D) recycling facility in Westboro.
The new site will process 275 tons of brick, concrete, steel, wood, asphalt, carpet, gypsum, and household recyclables daily, while bringing much of it back to usable market. "By recycling these materials, we can reduce the strain on the Commonwealth's landfills and the nation's natural resources while saving money and supporting needed economic development," said Jim Harvey, CEO of E.L. Harvey.
The end goal of a C&D facility is to cut down on the 5 million tons of construction and demolition waste generated on an annual basis by the Bay State. Additionally, the Dept. of Environmental Protection (EPA) recently passed laws requiring developers to recycle 88 percent of all construction and demolition waste associated with an individual project, and prohibiting them from disposing of the materials in Massachusetts landfills.
In a recent Worcester Business Journal story (see "Recycling depots aim to cut down on wastes," July 10), other examples of C&D recycling facilities were profiled for their role in reducing construction and demolition wastes going to landfills.
