Entrepreneurs' top 2007 concern: finding qualified help

Entrepreneurs are optimistic about 2007 but worry about finding qualified workers to fuel their business growth, according to the second annual survey by Entrepreneur magazine and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The survey polled 281 fast growing firms, and found that 20 percent of them believed their top challenge in 2007 would be finding and retaining qualified workers. This was also the top concern in 2006. The next most important issues were: growing the business (18 percent), sales, revenue and demand issues (11 percent), and changing economic conditions (10 percent). However, the survey found that entrepreneurs were more upbeat this year than last, with 66 percent expressing optimism about the U.S. economy compared to 62 percent last year.

The companies polled included 129 technology firms and 152 nontechnology firms, with average revenue exceeding $35 million, and growth of 211 percent over the last 5 years. Seventy-seven percent had 100 employees or fewer. Full survey results are available in the January issue of Entrepreneur.
