EPA fines Malden bakery

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has hit a Malden bakery with a $50,000 fine for violating the federal Clean Air Act.

The Piantedosi Baking Co. will also spend $25,000 on renewable energy credits as part of its settlement with the EPA.

According to the EPA, the bakery operated a number of industrial freezers at two facilities in Malden. The freezers contain ozone-depleting substances like CFCs, but the company had failed to properly document or verify that necessary leak repairs had been made to the freezers.

The lack of documentation made it difficult for the EPA to determine if the company was repairing refrigerant leaks.
